Introduction to Religion

Introduces the study of religion by examining the variety of interwoven elements found in religions throughout the world. These elements include the nature of the divine and ultimate reality, sacred history, sacred texts and languages, founders and heroes, religious ethics and rituals, religious uses of art, ideas of salvation, and more. Commonalities and differences among religions help to illuminate the phenomenon of religion in its various manifestations. (3 lecture hours)

Introduces the history and thought of the Old Testament (also known as the Hebrew Bible). Topics include the place of the Old Testament in its ancient Near Eastern context; the books and genres of the Old Testament; the composition and canonization of the Old Testament; and the doctrines, ethics, and rituals of the Old Testament. Students will be introduced to both modern scholarly methods of interpreting the Old Testament and traditional Jewish and Christian interpretations of the text. (3 lecture hours)

Will also focus on the research methodologies devised by scholars to reconstruct the life of Jesus.
