Students will be introduced to the Current Procedure Terminology (CPT) coding system for procedures in ambulatory care and services rendered by physicians. (3 lecture hours)

Students will be introduced to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10-CM for coding and reimbursement of physician office services. (2 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Inpatient Procedural Coding
3 Credit Hours

This course provides an introduction to the format and application of the ICD-10-PCS coding system. Students will learn the unique meaning of each PCS code character and how it relates to code application. They will expand their knowledge of inpatient procedures and ancillary services as they review medical documentation to abstract information pertinent to building PCS codes. (3 lecture hours)

This course introduces the ICD-10-CM code set, coding format and structure, coding conventions, and guidelines. Students will evaluate medical documentation and learn how to abstract, assign, and sequence diagnostic codes. (3 lecture hours)

Billing in Physician Offices

Students will be introduced to an overview of medical office procedures including billing, scheduling, legalities, and office protocol. (2 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Survey of Health Information Technology

Students are introduced to how health information technicians serve patients in a variety of healthcare delivery settings. The course covers the history of the profession, record content, regulatory standards, data technologies, medical classification systems, and terminologies for all types of health care facility records. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Disease and Pharmacology for Health Information Technology
4 Credit Hours

Students will examine information on abnormal changes in body systems as indicators of common diseases and pathological conditions. Information is presented on the pharmacologic agents used to treat the diseases with a focus on fundamental concepts of drug classification. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Statistics for Health Information Technology

Students are introduced to collecting and utilizing data for inpatient hospital and other health records to create useful information through the application of statistical processes. (4 lecture hours)

Revenue Cycle Management for Health Information Technology
4 Credit Hours

Students are introduced to the financial aspects of healthcare. The course covers registration, medical coding systems, healthcare insurance, reimbursement methodologies, compliance, charge capture, claims processing, and the collection of patient service revenue. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Introduction to International Classification of Diseases for Health Information Technology
4 Credit Hours

Students are introduced to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) as equivalents to diagnostic terms documented in all health records. Students are also introduced to the Procedure Coding System (PCS) as equivalents to inpatient procedures used for inpatient facility claims. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Independent Study
1-4 Credit Hours

Exploration and analysis of topics within the discipline to meet individual student-defined course description, goals, objectives, topical outline and methods of evaluation in coordination with and approved by the instructor. This course may be taken four times for credit as long as different topics are selected. (8 lab hours)

Health Law and Compliance in Health Information Technology
4 Credit Hours

Students are introduced to concepts of health law, legal proceedings, information confidentiality, data security, and workplace law. In addition the areas of performance quality initiatives, risk management, compliance, and medical staff organization are covered. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Data Management for Health Information Technology
4 Credit Hours

Students are introduced to data dictionaries and data sets for compliance with governance standards. Students manage data within a database system and identify standards for the exchange of health information. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

HIT 2208
Advanced Medical Coding
3 Credit Hours

In this course, students will combine their skills and knowledge from the CPT, Diagnostic and Inpatient Procedural Coding courses to code both inpatient and outpatient scenarios. Students will have the opportunity to use encoder software to aid in the application of codes. In addition, students will further evaluate coding resources such as Coding Clinic and CPT Assistant as they learn the intricacies of the coding process. Students will apply their coding knowledge as they audit previously coded scenarios for completeness and accuracy. (3 lecture hours)

Study of nomenclature and classification of systems including coding and sequencing. Introduction to International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 coding principles. (2 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

Prerequisite: ANAT 1500 with a grade of C or better or equivalent, or ANAT 1551 and ANAT 1552 both with a grade of C or better or equivalent, or ANAT 1571 and ANAT 1572 both with a grade of C or better or equivalent, and consent of instructor.

Health Information Technology Management and Leadership
4 Credit Hours

Students are introduced to management and leadership skills relevant to operating a Health Information Department. The concepts of organizational change, human resource strategies, performance improvement, financial management, workforce training, and the importance of cultural diversity will be reviewed. (3 lecture hours, 2 lab hours)

HIT 2250
Professional Practice Experience for Health Information Technology
2 Credit Hours

Students are exposed to the field of health information by using an educational EHR (electronic health record) to reinforce didactic instruction. Additionally, students complete externally supervised activities and assignments that relate to higher level competencies. Purpose of the course is to assimilate theory with practice, and the transition from student to productive workforce member. (1 lecture hour, 8 clinical hours)
